Adoption Metrics

Adoption metrics measure how quickly and deeply customers integrate and engage with a product or feature after purchase. Common adoption metrics include time to first value, feature activation rates, daily and monthly active user rates, and breadth of feature usage across available capabilities. High adoption correlates with retention and expansion, while low adoption is a leading indicator of churn risk. GTM strategy should address adoption by ensuring that onboarding messaging, in-product guidance, and customer success activities are aligned with the outcomes buyers expected when they purchased.

Why It Matters

Adoption metrics are the earliest signal of whether a customer relationship will result in retention or churn. Low adoption in the first 90 days predicts churn at the first renewal with high reliability. GTM teams that monitor adoption metrics can intervene early — connecting customers who aren't adopting with additional enablement before the relationship deteriorates.

Example

A SaaS company tracks 'time to first value' as its primary adoption metric and discovers that customers who complete a specific onboarding milestone within 14 days retain at 94%, while those who don't complete it within 30 days retain at only 61%. They restructure onboarding to drive that milestone within 7 days.
