Buyer Persona

A buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of an ideal individual buyer within a target company. Personas describe the human decision-makers and influencers the sales and marketing teams engage — including their job title, responsibilities, goals, challenges, objections, preferred information sources, and buying criteria. Unlike an ICP, which describes the ideal company, a persona describes the ideal person within that company. Effective personas are grounded in customer research rather than assumptions and are reviewed regularly to ensure they reflect real buyers.

Why It Matters

Buyers are humans with specific motivations, fears, and goals — not just job titles. Buyer personas translate market intelligence into human understanding, enabling messaging that connects emotionally as well as logically. Sales teams with well-developed personas have more productive conversations because they understand the buyer's world before the first meeting.

Example

A sales enablement platform creates a buyer persona for 'Marcus, VP of Sales at a 150-person SaaS company' — detailing his frustration with rep onboarding time, his metric accountability for quota attainment, and his skepticism about adding tools without proven ROI. Every marketing message and sales conversation references Marcus's reality.
